Roma 9:16

9:16 So then, ¹  it does not depend on human desire or exertion, ²  but on God who shows mercy.

Roma 9:31

9:31 but Israel even though pursuing ³  a law of righteousness ⁴  did not attain it. ⁵ 

¹ sn There is a double connective here that cannot be easily preserved in English: “consequently therefore,” emphasizing the conclusion of what he has been arguing.

² tn Grk “So then, [it does] not [depend] on the one who desires nor on the one who runs.”

³ tn Or “who pursued.” The participle could be taken adverbially or adjectivally.

⁴ tn Or “a legal righteousness,” that is, a righteousness based on law. This translation would treat the genitive δικαιοσύνης (dikaiosunh") as an attributed genitive (see ExSyn 89-91).

⁵ tn Grk “has not attained unto the law.”
